The Four Leaders

Unofficial Winners - Scott Swaney leads the breakaway group of master men shortly before the finish of the Long Beach Marathon. Behind him is Dennis Humphrey and Grant Foster; Andy Zak brings up the rear. ... At the final turn, the four were directed (apparently by a race marshal) to the wrong finish line: the one for the Bike Tour. As a result, they were not given race times or placements, and skaters who finished after them were listed as the official winners.

The same thing happened later with the lead pack in the open division. "The leaders were led down the wrong side as well and failed to get credit for finishing as the winners," says spectator Julia Williams of Nevada. "I know this because I personally watched as they came racing down the wrong side. One of them was my 13-year-old son (Nathan Williams). This was his first marathon. He gave it all he had and deserves recognition for placing first in his division (boys under 15)."
