Racing News U.S. Speed Coach Seeks Donations for Children's Skate Team in Mexico Got Any Closet Clutter You Can Spare? By Robert "Just the Factoids" Burnson U.S. World Team manager Linda Wood will be traveling to Mexico City this September to give a clinic for a children's skate team. But there's one catch: Most of the children on the team have little, if any, equipment. For the most part, they practice on old rec skates (or quads) and do without helmets or other forms of protective gear. Wood is asking for donations of used, but useable, equipment. "Whatever you've got in your closet has to be better than what they are skating on," said Wood, who along with her husband, Pete, is the coach of the Sunrise Speed Team in Citrus Heights, Calif. Wood hopes for donations of speed skates, helmets, wheels and spandex racing shirts and shorts. USA Roller Sports has committed to sending along some jerseys; Federal Express is giving Wood a special rate to ship the equipment to Mexico. The 25 children on the team range in age from 8 to 16. Their coach, Leticia Herrera, asked Wood to make the trip. Wood and her daughter Antoinette are paying all their own expenses.
