Rolling Into the Indoor Season With Motor City Madness!

No, It's Not a MONSTER Truck Show ... It's a New Indoor Inline Racing Event

Motor City Madness, the Wolverine's Thanksgiving Invitational: a Planet Preview

No, Motor City Madness is not the first event of the indoor inline racing season. ... Which one is? ... Heck if know! ... I'm new to the indoor world.

I can tell you this, the first stop on the Ohio Speedskating Tour was two weeks ago in Salem and was contested by a long list of indoor speed skating teams, including the Rolling Rednex, the Findlay Heat and lots of others I have also never heard of.

I can tell you another thing ... It's going to be a while until the next big U.S. outdoor event. (The next kinda big outdoor event is the Texas Road Rash on March 20, 2005.)

So I figured it was high time I learned something about indoor skating, which, after all, has produced the likes of Olympic Gold medalist Derek Parra and inline great Julie Glass.

So I says to me myself, Self, what should I do? ... I go to a web page that lists upcoming racing events. I throw a dart at the screen. Fortunately, I miss entirely. Deciding against a second throw, I take the first name on the list: Motor City Madness (which is Nov. 25 to 28 in Canton, Michigan).

I send out some emails. Make some phone calls.

Eureka! Another bonanza! (Which is not so surprising. Seems like just about everywhere you look in the inline world, you strike gold!)

This time I make the acquaintance of another American worthy of national treasure status: Robb Dunn, the coach of the Wolverine Speed Club, which is the host of Motor City Madness.

Robb, it turns out, is another pillar of the inline world. A former national champion roller skater, he quit racing in 1984 and has since coached a long line of inline champions, including Julie Glass, Jessica Smith and Theresa Cliff.

One of the few coaches who can match Robb's record is Virgil Dooley. And Dooley, who coached Derek Parra, has been around a lot longer. In fact, he was Robb's coach back in the days of roller skates!

... Anyway, Robb graciously answered our questions about Motor City Madness and indoor racing.

Thank you, Robb! And best of luck with the Madness.

Some skaters love skating indoors; others would rather be flash frozen ... How about you? ... Add your comments here!
