Industry News:

United Skate Schools Group Starts an Instructor Certification Program

Instructors Will Apparently Be Able to Choose Between United Skate or USA Fit

By Robert "Just the Factoids" Burnson

For the past few months, skaters who wanted to become certified inline instructors (and instructors who worried about renewing their certifications) have had no where to turn.

The organization that used to certify inline instructors (the International Inline Skating Association) closed up shop in December. And the group it assigned its duties, USA Fit, had yet to launch its certification program.

But soon, there may be two outfits certifying inline instructors.

The recently formed United Skate Schools Group (USSG) announced today that it is ready to start certifying (and insuring) inline instructors.

And meanwhile, USA Fit is still committed to starting its certification program, although there is no word on when that will begin.

United Skate's program apparently begins today.

IISA-certified instructors can apply on the group's web site to take a written recertification exam through the mail or email. (The exam covers class management, physiology, kinesiology, education and safety.)

New instructors will have to wait until May 14th to get certified. That's when United Skate offers its first full-fledged instructor exam at El Segundo, Calif. (An exam is planned for the East Coast during the summer.)

United Skate director Janet Miller Sheehan says her organization is responding to "an immediate need for instructor training and testing programs."

"There are skate schools that need to qualify and insure their new instructors; and individuals who would like to teach this summer; and instructors who need support in building their skate school businesses."

The announcement of the new certification and insurance program could be viewed as bad news for USA Fit, which will now have to vie with United Skate for instructors.

But USA Fit's founder, Denis Calabrese, welcomed the announcement.

"I don't know the details, but anything that strengthens the sport sounds like good news to me," he said.

Asked via email if USA Fit was still planning to start an instructor certification program, he said, "Yes, we are."

Other info:

  • United Skate announced that it will hold an education conference on Oct. 15th at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach in conjunction with the Long Beach Inline marathon (Oct. 16th).
  • The cost of the full certification exam (as opposed to the written exam) will be $285, including insurance.
  • Sheehan owns the California Skate School in El Segundo.
