Planet Profile of Randy Bowman:

With Several Marathon Wins Under His Belt, Bowman Shoots for Worlds

Young Ohio Skater Is Turning Up the Training This Year

Prefers Outdoors

Bowman does most of his skating outdoors, but he also attends occasional indoor practices of local speed skating teams.

Indoors is where Bowman started racing. He started racing as a 10-year-old with the Neo Speed Skating team of Ohio.

He is still a member of the team, but he only skates with it occasionally, preferring to spend his time outdoors.

"Indoors is so intense," he explained. "There's so much adrenaline cooped up in a little area. I would rather skate outside."

Fewer Races

Bowman plans to cut back on the number of races he competes in this year as he prepares for Outdoor Nationals, which are May 30 to June 8 in Colorado Springs.

"I'm going to steer away from racing every weekend. That was really tough on me last year.

"When you race that much, you don't have enough time to recover for the next race."

Bowman plans to enter some of the larger U.S. races this year, including the Long Beach and Northshore marathons.

Last year, he finished 15th at Long Beach and 39th in the Northshore, which attracts the best skaters in the world because it is a World Inline Cup event.

Back For More Road Rash

Bowman said he decided to return to the Road Rash this year because it's a "fun race" with a good field that will give him a preview of what he needs to work on this year.

So far, only a handful of professional skaters have signed up for the race, although more are likely to appear by Sunday.

As he prepares for Outdoor Nationals, Bowman said he expects to train more than ever this year. But he doesn't expect that to change his attitude about the sport.

"I' haven't really been too serious," he said. "It's true I'm out training more than I have in the past.

"But for me, it's more about how to make it fun. ... I have fun just getting out there and skating."
