Planet Extras! | Racing News ... Predicted Heavy Rains Could Convert Disney Inline Marathon into a Skate Tour Organizers Say They Will Not Allow Race on Unsafe Course By Robert "Just the Factoids" Burnson Race organizers may convert tomorrow's Disney World Inline Marathon into a 13-mile skate tour if predicted thundershowers make the racecourse unsafe. "That's one of our contingency plans," Disney's Paul Ortolano said today. "We want everybody to still enjoy themselves. But if it does rain, and the course is unsafe to race on, we will convert it to a tour or a fun skate." The final call, Ortolano said, will be made Sunday morning by race director Dan Joyce. Web forecasts are predicing thunderstorms at Disney World starting at 6 a.m. Sunday. The race is scheduled to start at 6:15 a.m. If the decision is made to convert the marathon into a skate tour, skaters will make one loop around the 13.1-mile racecourse skating at a "controlled pace," Ortolano said. Disney officials appear to be particularly concerned about safety this year. Last year, they were criticized for failing to maintain a safe racecourse after a wet boardwalk upended many skaters, including most of the lead pack of professional racers.
