Skate skills: This week's tip: Heading out of town for a race or just to get some skating in? Be sure to pack some petroleum jelly (i.e., Vaseline) for your bearings. If it looks like rain, take your wheels off your frames and put a dab of the gooey stuff on the outside of your bearings. It will keep water out without hurting their performance. Another good thing to bring on road trips, especially if you're headed to a marathon, is a roll of sports tape. Use small pieces of tape to cover the heads of your axles. This will prevent road vibration from causing your axles to back out, which means you won't lose your wheels. ... And that's always a good thing! (Note: You can also use electrical tape. But sports tape typically stays put in any kind of weather. ... Besides, it comes in handy if you get hurt.) --- Linda Wood has vast experience when it comes to traveling with skates. For five of the last six years, she has served as a manager or coach of the U.S. World Team — and that has meant traveling the globe with piles of skate equipment in tow. Currently, she is in Anyang, South Korea, at the World Speed Skating Championships. (This year, she is coaching the junior world team.) When she's not on the road, she makes her home in Sacramento, Calif., where she and her husband, Pete, coach the Triad Racing inline speed skating team. One of the team's stars is son Josh Wood, who is a member of the U.S. marathon squad. Related links: • Triad Racing web site.
