Where to Skate - the Van Fleet Trail, Central Florida View From the Trail All in a Day's Roll - Ilene and her husband, John, see all kinds of wildlife on the trail ... and some not-so-wildlife. "Once in awhile some of the local cows escape their pastures and walk down the middle of the trail ... leaving a trail of their own," Ilene says. "Luckily, the trail is wide enough (about 12 feet across) to skate around these bovine markers. "Most of the animals that we see are either looking for food (e.g.: the armadillos), water (the gators), shelter (deer), or sex (the tortoises). Squirrels are the worst! They will run along the trail and at the last second dart across in front of us! "We've never had to vault a gator, but we have had to jump up, over, and sideways of snakes that refused to move. "I am always looking down the trail for anything that appears to be a small branch, which could be a snake in disguise. Usually, the poisonous snakes will just lie there as we fly by, but the nonpoisonous ones will slither away with amazing rapidity! We don't worry too much about the gators. We skate in the morning, and they don't come out on the banks until later in the day." (That's very reassuring, Ilene!) (Photo by Ilene Kummer)
