Where to Skate - the Van Fleet Trail, Central Florida

No Gatorback ... But a Few Gators

Straight and Smooth ... With a Little Gatorback - The Gen. James Van Fleet State Trail in Central Florida is another of the jewels of the U.S. rail-to-trail network. Except for one curve, it's a straight shot from Mabel in the north to Polk City in the south. That's 29.2 miles of scenic rolling through farmland, pine plantations and the semitropical Green Swamp. "Overall, it's very beautiful," says skater Ilene Kummer of Florida. "It's not unusual to see small gators, snakes, deer, raccoons, tortoises, and even an otter or two."
