Racing News New York 100K Gets Put on Hold Pending Hunt for New Date 100K and Marathon May Be Pushed Back to Late October or November By Robert "Just the Factoids" Burnson One of the world's premier ultra-marathons, the New York 100K, has been put on hold while organizers try to get the required permits. The group of New York speed skaters organizing the event had scheduled it (and the New York City Marathon) for Sept. 26th in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. But they were unable to get the required permits. They are now working with the event's former organizer, the Empire Skate Club, to reschedule the event. "We have every intention of running an event, but we don't have a date yet," said Robert Kaskel, president of the Empire Skate Club. The organizers tried moving the event to Oct. 1st, but ran into a scheduling conflict at Prospect Park. The following weekend was ruled out because it coincides with the Athens to Atlanta Road Skate (Oct. 9th) in Georgia. The 87-mile a2a is considered the most prestigious ultra-marathon in the United States. That pushed the earliest possible date for the 100K to the weekend of Oct. 22nd. "It will probably be pushed back to late October or early November," said Max Ivenitsky of the Empire Speed Team. Although chilly, Brooklyn is usually still skate-able in November. Average high temperatures for the month range from a high of 54 degrees (Fahrenheit) to a low of 40. (posted on August 4, 2005)
