By Robert "Just the Factoids" Burnson Ezeefit Ankle Booties with new liner For several years, Ezeefit Ankle Booties have been one of the best products on the market for banishing blisters and hot spots caused by ill-fitting skates. But even Ezeefits weren't perfect. I, for one, developed hot spots on the tops of my feet while wearing Ezeefits. But fortunately, Ezeefit Sports has continued to improve its booties and has come out with a new version that appears, so far, to be flawless. What's New The new booties feature a liner made of a red micro-fiber. (The new liner is only available on the 2mm booties.) The liner feels like silk against the skin and reduces friction. The thick outer layer of the booties is unchanged. It is made of neoprene (the stuff of wet suits) stitched together top and bottom. I first tested Ezeefit Ankle Booties two years ago. At the time, I found them to be very effective for alleviating blisters and hot spots that developed while I was breaking in a pair of off-the-shelf speed boots. But after a few months, I started developing "lace bite" — hot spots on the top of my feet under my laces — despite the booties. The only way I found to alleviate the problem was to wear pads over the hot spots; and then, once the skin healed, to keep my laces and ankle buckles loose. While this cured the lace bite, it made it harder for me to control my skates. I got used to skating with "sloppy" boots and figured it was just something I would have to live with until I bought custom boots. But then, two weeks ago, the new Ezeefit booties arrived in the mail. Since then, I have found I can tighten my skates as much as I like without developing blisters, hot spots or lace bite. In fact, wearing the new booties, my old off-the-shelf skates suddenly feel quite comfortable. New Price
Ezeefit Sports has raised the price of its 2mm Ankle Booties. They are now $18 a pair, up from $15. But considering the expense of blister bandages and mole skins, they are still a bargain. Buying Advice If you are prone to blisters or hot spots, give Ezeefit Ankle Booties a try. They are often all that is required to smooth out a rocky relationship between foot and skate. They won't solve every blister problem. Sometimes, faulty technique or bad boots are to blame. But they work well for most skaters and do an excellent job of protecting the mid-foot and ankle from the ravages of rubbing, even when wet. And unlike most blister products, you can use them over and over again. • Ezeefit Sports
