Olympic short track skater Anthony Lobello and World Team member Emily Scott won today's U.S. 10K Classic in Atlanta.
Lobello, a former inline national champion who moved to ice several years ago, was never far from the lead. Veteran Eddy Matzger, 40, of Floyd, VA, attacked on the first hill, but he couldn't get away. On the next hill, Lobello attacked, leaving everyone behind but Matzger and Jonathan Blair. A couple of hills later, Lobello attacked again to take the lead for good. He finished about ten seconds ahead of Matzger and Blair. Matzger won the sprint for second place. Francisco Ramirez won the field sprint for fourth. Shaunacy Sutter was fifth. Lobello, 23, of Tallahassee, FL, was a member of the U.S. short track team at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Before moving to ice, he was a junior (under 18) national champion inline skater and member of the U.S. World Team. As a junior (under 18), he collected a silver medal in the 500 meters and a gold in a relay at the 2001 World Championships. Accurate times were not available in the men's race due to a problem with the timing system.
