Event News: Outdoor Season Heads for Low Key Finale Once again this year, the number of skaters headed to the Silver Strand Half Marathon in Southern California is unremarkable. Based on registrations so far, organizer Rick Kozlowski estimates that about 200 skaters will lace up for the event Sunday. That's about the same number as last year, but 60 fewer than the year before. The San Diego-area event marks the end of the 2006 North American outdoor racing season. A multi-sport event, it has separate starts for runners, wheelchair athletes and skaters (inline and roller). Kozlowski said he will reevaluate the divisions after Sunday's race to decide whether any should be eliminated. He said he had hoped to attract at least 250 skaters to the race this year, but that despite the flat turnout, doubted he would cut them out of the event. The Silver Strand features one of the most beautiful road courses in the country. It starts on the island of Coronado and rolls along the Pacific Coast on its way to Imperial Beach. While some of the participants race, others take their time and enjoy the scenery. The skate race starts at 7:10 a.m. Registration is $55 today and Thursday but jumps to $75 this weekend.
