But it hasn't entirely given up on skaters. It has added a full and half inline marathon to its Avalon Park Running Festival on Nov. 4. Buttar apparently axed the stand-alone marathon due to low skater interest. Last year, only 31 skated in the inaugural event. • Go to more information. Online Shop Opens for 'Space-Age' Wheels The new pc-vane racing wheels are like nothing you've ever skated on — at least that's what the company says. One thing for sure: They're pricey. Mantia, Glass to Offer Clinics World champ Joey Mantia will teach speed clinics this fall in Arizona and Idaho. The first will be Oct. 14 in conjunction with the Arizona Rattleskate Invitational; the second will be Nov. 3 in conjunction with the Coeur d'Alene Inline Classic in Idaho. Wednesday Oct. 4, 2006 Skate Bytes 'Heroic Rollerblading Teens from Kilmarnock' Yes, Kilmarnock, a mining town in Scotland. The four boys, 15-17, were skating along when they spotted a thug robbing a woman at knifepoint. One of the boys helped the woman; the others chased the mugger. He got away but was later arrested after the boys picked him out in a photo line up. The boys were among a group of "local heroes" honored Monday at Edinburgh Castle. ... Retired from racing, Olympic gold medalist Derek Parra hopes to become a coach in a program aimed at turning top inline speed skaters into Olympians. A former inline world champion, Parra made the transition to ice in the late 1990s after inline was rejected as an Olympic sport.
