World renowned speed coach Bill Begg shares his vast knowledge of skating every week in his "Ask Bill Begg!" column on the Inline Planet. | Anything Happening in Malaysia? Hi, Bill: I'm an amateur skater who enjoys speed skating. I'm currently based in the UK and have been participating in marathons in Europe. But I am planning to move back to Malaysia, my home country. Could you please advise me on plans for the 2011 Asian Inline Cup? Also, are there other speed skating events in Asia that I might compete in? Thanks, Gibran Hi, Gibran: You’re in luck. Some big skate activity is headed to Southeast Asia next year. For starters, there will be the Southeast Asian Games in Palembang, Indonesia. Inline speed skating will be part of the Games. So if you are so inclined, you should talk to Malaysian officials to find out if you are eligible to compete. Send me an email through this column, including details of your skating background, and I will put you in touch with the right people. Aside from the Games, the Asian Inline Cup will reappear in Malaysia next year. Last year’s AIC event in Putrajaya had a great course. And Eusoffe Chua is planning an AIC event in Malaysia in 2011. Another thing that should help boost skating in Southeast Asia is the newly created International Skating Academy. The academy plans to conduct coaching courses throughout Asia next year. The courses, which I helped design, will improve the quality of speed coaching throughout the region.
With better coaching and skaters like you returning to Malaysia, we should be able to get our sport rolling forward in Southeast Asia. Cheers, Bill • Ask Bill a question
