U.S. 10K Classic TV commercial The competition is expected to be fierce at Monday’s U.S. 10K Classic in Atlanta. Among top skaters headed to the annual Labor Day event are several World Team members, including Bont’s Justin Stelly and Erin Jackson; Pinnacle’s Jonathan Blair; and Harry Vogel. Also expected are Tru-Rev’s Julian Rivera, winner of last year's NorthShore Inline Marathon; Twincam’s Eddy Matzger, and K2/Excel’s Francisco Ramirez. The inline race is expected to draw about 250 skaters this year, said inline coordinator Charlie Bennett. The Classic is a multi-sports event that attracts about 14,000 athletes each year and large crowds of spectators who line the downtown racecourse. The event features a series of five 10Ks, one each for pro cyclists, sprint cyclists, inline skaters, wheelchair athletes and runners. Racing starts at 7:15 a.m. EDT and finishes an hour later. The skate race is a Class A event in the 2010 National Roller Cup.
The inline race may get an influx of skaters this year from NIRA Nationals, an indoor event held in nearby Smyrna, GA. NIRA organizers scheduled the event for Saturday and Sunday to coincide with the 10K Classic. The Classic is a charity event, which has raised over 4.5 million dollars for the World Children's Center. The weather forecast is for sunny skies with a high temperature of 86 degrees on Monday. The Inline Planet will provide coverage of the race on Monday morning.
