World renowned speed coach Bill Begg shares his vast knowledge of skating every week in his "Ask Bill Begg!" column on the Inline Planet. | How Can I Hone My Coaching Skills? Dear Bill: I am a skater/coach in Iran who trains some of the athletes on our national inline speed skating team. I want to improve my coaching skills and knowledge. But I have been unable to find any workshops or courses for inline speed coaches. Do you know of any? - Best regards, Mojtaba Hajipour Hi, Mojtaba: Your timing is great. We are currently putting the finishing touches on a speed coach certification program through the International Skating Academy. Our goal is to accredit 2000 speed coaches throughout Asia and the developing nations within the next three years. We are about ready to submit our course materials to the Federation International de Roller Sports. In fact, I presented one of the components of the course last week at a Sport South Canterbury meeting in New Zealand. We plan to launch our certification program in 2011. We have already scheduled a few clinics and are working on translations of course materials, particularly into Mandarin. If you can’t wait until next year, you can come to Haining, China, next month. I will be conducting a coaching course, tentatively scheduled for Oct. 7-17, at the site of last year’s World Championships. Or, if you would rather visit Timaru, New Zealand, I will be conducting a seminar there during the inline tour and stage races, Oct. 18-23. (For more information, contact me through this column or my page on the Skater Network.)
Thanks for your question. There is a big shortage of speed coaches worldwide, and we need qualified coaches to insure our sport continues to thrive. Cheers, Bill • Ask Bill a question
