Also in the mix will be free agent Ty Fidler of St. Louis, who is coming off two marathon wins in Indianapolis. And then there's the young star, Zach Stoppelmoor, an 11-year-old Cado Motus skater who won his division this spring in the highly competitive Trophée des 3 Pistes in Europe. "It's going to be three days of great racing," says Peter Starykowicz, the inline coordinator for the event. The races are part of the multi-sport Great Midwest Marathon and Endurance Festival, which is expected to draw thousands of athletes to Elkhart Lake over the Memorial Day weekend.
The skate racing starts Saturday with a criterium, continues Sunday with the NROC-sanctioned inline marathon and concludes Monday with individual and team time trials. (See schedule below.) The inline marathon, a Major class NROC race, starts at 8:10 am (CDT) in downtown Elkhart Lake. Full marathoners will skate five loops of the six-mile road course; half marathoners will skate two. Forecasters predict pleasant weather on Sunday morning: party cloudy with temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees.
