Great racing, NROC and flip-flops. ... What more could a skater ask for? NROC moves to the Midwest this weekend for the inaugural May Day 10K, a beach-themed multi-sport event that blends serious racing with flip-flops and Margarita-flavored sports drinks. The new event is the brainchild of the NorthShore Inline Marathon's new executive director, Tara Alfonsi. "We have such a loyal base of skaters in the area, so our idea was to give them an event to kick off their season," says Alfonsi, who rolled into her new job one year ago. "We also wanted to take the opportunity to expose runners to skating." The event is open to skaters, runners and walkers. Skaters start at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lake County Arena in Twin Harbors, MN (just up the road from Duluth). Runners start at 10:05 a.m.; walkers, at 10:06 a.m. The race follows a smooth and wide county highway (CSAH 2), which will be closed to traffic, and includes a short detour on the way back. "There's a little uphill on the way out and a little downhill on the way back," Alfonsi says. "The pavement is in very good condition." Alfonsi has packed the event with fun. Participants will receive a free pair of May Day 10K flip-flops and a temporary tattoo. After the race, there will be music, beach food and Margarita-flavored recovery drinks at the arena. The race is a Class A event of the 2010 National Roller Cup. Follow live coverage of the race on the Inline Planet starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (Central Time).
