The Str8 Sk8 promotional video
For 15 years, the Str8 Sk8 race series in Roseville, MN, has been providing inline skaters with the opportunity to test themselves and improve their skills. But unless more skaters start attending, 2008 could be the last year for the venerable race series, says sponsor Adam Bradley of Adams Inline. In its prime, the "Straight Skate" attracted 80 to 90 skaters a week to its races at the John Rose Oval. But in recent years, the number has dwindled, and last year only about 25 skaters a night attended the race series, Bradley said. The series pits skaters against each other in three categories. And with that number of categories, "we need at least 25 to 30 skaters a night to keep it exciting," Bradley said. If helping to keep the race series alive isn't enough motivation for you, consider the potential for improving your skills. Str8 Sk8 racers hone their cross-over technique, learn how to jump in and out of pacelines, and polish their surge and recovery skills. "Out of every corner, you're surging to get to the next one. And that really prepares you for the kind of surges that happen in marathons," Bradley said Series Details
Cost: $10 a night for adults; $6 for children. Skaters compete in two races per night: one shorter, one longer. Skaters earn points, which are maintained on the Adams Inline website. At the end of the series, medals are awarded to the top three finishers in each category. The series starts next Wednesday (June 25) and continues each Wednesday night until Aug. 13. Racing starts at 7 p.m. The John Rose Oval is in Roseville, 20 minutes northeast of Minneapolis. ...
