Powerslide's Alexis Contin broke away from the hard-driving lead pack about ten miles before the finish of the Squiggy Inline Classic Marathon and went on to win by nearly a minute. 2008 Squiggy Inline Classic Top Finishers:
The Frenchman's time was 1 hour, 12 minutes and 44.56 seconds. Contin, 21, is a former world champion and one of the top skaters in the World Inline Cup. He spent most of the race in the lead pack of about a dozen skaters. But at the end of the third lap, with one lap to go, he took off. Three other skaters went with him. But he eventually dropped them. He arrived at the finish line 50 seconds ahead of the field sprint. Sander DeGraaff of the Netherlands won the field sprint to claim second. Jarrett Paul was third. Women's Race Finishing with the men's pack, Briana Kramer, 17, of High Point, NC, won the women's race with a time of 1:13:35. She finished seventh overall.
Vanessa Ayala claimed second with a time of 1:13:37. The weather was unseasonably cold for the race at Flatwoods Wilderness Park in Tampa, FL. At start time, the temperature hovered around 40 degrees (F). The event, which included a half marathon, drew a healthy crowd of 128 skaters.
