A Singapore adventurer has broken the Guinness world record for longest trip on inline skates. Khoo Swee Chiow skated 6088 kilometers (3782.9 miles) during a three-month trek that started in Hanoi and made its way through Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia before ending in Singapore. The previous Guinness record for longest skate was 4,175 kilometers. Khoo, 43, is an adventurer and motivational speaker who had little skating experience before starting his record attempt on Oct. 20. He finished his trek on Jan. 21 when he rolled into Johor Bahru in Singapore after 93 days of skating. Previous adventures have taken Khoo to the summit of many of the world's tallest peaks, including Everest. He also hold the Guinness record for longest scuba dive in a controlled environment (212.5 hours).
He said he set the inline skating record to make a point about the use of non-polluting forms of transportation. "We’re in this energy crisis age now," he told the Star. "It's important to think about how we conduct our daily lives and find ways to conserve energy and reduce usage." Khoo skated 70 to 80 kilometers on most days, using ski poles. But on some stretches of unpaved road he found he had to essentially walk on his skates and his progress slowed to 20 kilometers a day. He plans to write a book about his journey. ...
